Care costs cap delayed until 2020

Personal Home Care ServicesThe government says its flagship policy to cap care costs in England will be delayed until 2020.

Costs were to be limited to £72,000 for the over-65s and younger adults with disabilities from April 2016.

The Department of Health said it was still “firmly committed” to the cap, but questions are now being raised whether the policy needs rethinking.

The move came after councils wrote to ministers asking for a delay because of the “enormous pressures” they faced.

For years councils have been warning the care system – which covers residential care and help at home with tasks such as washing and dressing – has been underfunded. A shortfall of £4.3bn has been predicted by the end of the decade – nearly a third.

Concerns had also been expressed that the drive for a national living wage would push up costs.

Adult social care firms struggling for staff

Home care and nurses recruitmentAdult social care firms are struggling to hire, retain and train staff as a result of cuts to council budgets, a survey of senior officials suggests.

Councils in England are facing a £1.1bn shortfall this year, on top of “almost unendurable” cuts since 2010, the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services has warned.

Freezing care provider fees to save money was no long sustainable, it said.

Ministers say extra money will help NHS and social care services work together.

The survey, which was completed by 147 directors of adult social services for councils in England, suggests that funding reductions to social care budgets have totalled £4.6bn since 2010 – a 31% overall reduction. To read more visit the BBC website.
